Our Approach to Ayurveda

Ayurveda – Knowledge of Life and Health

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine from South Asia, developed over thousands of years through understanding the relationship between body, mind and environment. It takes a holistic approach to health, viewing each person as a whole. This philosophy lies at the heart of Plantation Villa and shapes everything we do.

What is Ayurveda? Rather than focusing only on illness, Ayurveda looks at the whole person — body, mind, spirit and environment.

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of health and healing, originating in South Asia more than 2,000 years ago.

Deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s healing traditions, Ayurveda here combines classical practice with Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine and remains a living tradition today.

By understanding each person’s unique constitution, Ayurveda uses natural therapies, nourishing food, herbal medicine and mindful routines to restore harmony, strengthen vitality and support lasting wellbeing.

Our approach We weave the Ayurvedic principles into your daily life.

Every part of the retreat is shaped by this understanding, from quiet spaces for reflection to communal areas that invite connection.

You will find this approach in how the centre is designed and set up, the way meals are sourced and prepared right in to how treatments are administered. Also extending into our philosophy, how we care for the land and support our local community. We believe that for you to find true balance, the world around you must be cared for as well.

We are your home away from home, where you can step away from the noise of everyday life and immerse yourself in an authentic Ayurvedic experience where you feel supported and loved — a place to reconnect, restore and cultivate a way of living that supports your whole self.

Our 6 Pillars

We believe our health, wellbeing and environment are all interconnected. Driven by kindness and inspired by ancestral roots and indigenous practices, our philosophy links together these six pillars, not just through the heart, body and mind but also through community, earth and spirit.

Heart

Heart

Emotional wellbeing must be the very start of every journey. We begin with loving kindness, understanding that good health is much more than just the body. Using our safe and loving environment you will have the space to reflect on how you deal with emotions. Inspired by Buddhist teachings, our serene sanctuary helps you find the tools for inner peace, uplifted balance and soulful transformation.

Mind

Mind

Any change in the body causes an effect on our thinking; to reshape our overall wellbeing, we must therefore also take care of our minds. Ayurveda offers medicinal remedies while yoga, meditation, wisdom talks, a calming environment and the company of empaths combine to soothe and sharpen our life views.

Body

Body

Nutrition, lifestyle and sleep are needed for a healthy body. We focus on fresh, organic food prepared by our Ayurvedic doctors using Ayurveda principles. Regular yoga helps our internal systems function better; paired with calm evenings and tranquil environments, sleep is improved, too.

Community

Community

We are not just a retreat but a social enterprise that funds our own charity, The Metta Trust alongside UK mental health organisations. We believe that Plantation Villa belongs to all, and our communities are a vital part of our philosophy, from the Sri Lankan staff and school children we support to the local community that surround our Herefordshire retreat.

Earth

Earth

Inner journeys begin by connecting not just with people, but with animals and nature, each depending on the other. We know that a natural environment supports good mental and physical health and our commitment helps protect nature through careful reforestation and preservation of wildlife.

Spirit

Spirit

Spirituality is the conclusion of our path, the lived experience of unity where meaning, truth and the self become one, leading to a lasting sense of fulfillment. By keeping the mind calm, the body healthy and the self connected to nature, we can shape the meaning we give to life.
